Our verdict

If you already own a BRITA jug and live in a hard water area, this is the cartridge to use. BRITA says Limescale Expert is 50% more effective at removing limescale than its standard MAXTRA PRO Pure Performance cartridge; it does not publish the test behind that figure, so treat it as a relative claim rather than a measurement for your water. Each cartridge lasts up to 150 litres or four weeks, so at the time limit you need 13 a year, two six-packs and one more. Skip it if your jug is not a BRITA. The variant trap: BRITA also sells MAXTRA PRO All-in-1 and Pure Performance cartridges in similar packaging, and Limescale Expert in 3 and 6 packs, so check the title says Limescale Expert and count the cartridges.

Getting the most from it

Prepare each new cartridge as BRITA's jug instructions say, reset the Memo indicator when you change it, and change on time even if the jug still pours. Filtering only what you drink and boil stretches each cartridge's 150 litres.

How many do I need a year?

At one every four weeks, 13. If you filter more than about 5.3 litres a day you will reach 150 litres sooner.

Will it fit my Marella or Style jug?

BRITA says it fits all BRITA jugs.
