Our verdict
Kilrock-K is the straightforward choice if you descale often. The method on Kilrock's own page is simple: half fill and boil the kettle, add one 80 ml measure (the cap), leave it for 10 minutes or until the fizzing stops, pour away, reboil with fresh water, pour away and rinse. Dualit publishes its own instruction sheet for using Kilrock K in Dualit kettles, with stricter steps: take the kettle off the base, leave at least 5 minutes and no longer than 1 hour, soak the spout filter in a mug of the solution, rinse at least three times and boil one kettle of fresh water to discard. Skip it if spills on marble or enamel would be a problem: Dualit's sheet says not to use it on those surfaces and not to stand the bottle on a worktop. The variant trap: Kilrock also sells "Big K" bottles in other sizes with their own doses, so read the label of the bottle you actually buy.
Handling and storage
Dualit's sheet lists formic acid as the active ingredient. Wear rubber gloves, point the spout away from people and sockets, wipe the bottle after use and store it out of reach of children. Wash your hands afterwards.
