Its value for hard water depends on the cartridge. This listing includes one MAXTRA PRO Pure Performance cartridge, a general-purpose filter; for limescale, switch to MAXTRA PRO Limescale Expert, which BRITA says fits all its jugs. Skip the XL if it has to live in the fridge door: BRITA designs the smaller Marella Cool (2.4 L, 10.5 cm deep) for that and does not make the same claim for the 14.8 cm deep XL. The variant trap: BRITA sells the Marella in several sizes, colours and cartridge bundles, so check the capacity and the cartridge named in the title.
