Our verdict

The TIKKA suits walking better than running. Its strength is the burn-time table: Petzl publishes 100 lumens reaching 45 m for twelve hours on three AAA batteries, then a reserve mode rather than sudden darkness. Its beam is wide and even, which is what you want at walking pace, and AAA batteries are easy to carry as spares on a long winter walk. It also has red light, a lock, IPX4 weather resistance and a battery indicator.

At 94 g it is heavier than an ultralight rechargeable, and its 70 m maximum distance is shorter, so fast trail runners may want something lighter with more throw. The variant trap: Petzl also sells the TIKKA CORE, a rechargeable version with different figures, and colour variants; this link is the 350-lumen TIKKA in blue.

Batteries and upgrades

Petzl lists alkaline, lithium and Ni-MH rechargeable AAA batteries as compatible. If you later want USB charging, the TIKKA also accepts Petzl's CORE rechargeable battery, which Petzl says raises maximum output to 450 lumens.
