Our verdict

The NU25 MCT UL is a running torch first. At 47 g with its headband, it is about half the weight of a typical AAA head torch, which matters when it is bouncing on your forehead for an hour. Nitecore lists up to 400 lumens and a 132 m throw, enough for unlit lanes as well as town pavements, plus an IP66 rating that shrugs off rain. The red auxiliary light and three white colour temperatures are useful extras; a warmer beam can be easier on the eyes in mist.

The trade-off is the sealed 700 mAh battery. Nitecore publishes a 45-hour maximum runtime, but that is on the lowest setting; it does not publish per-mode runtimes on its page, so recharge after each long run. The variant trap: Nitecore sells several NU25 versions (the older NU25, the NU25 UL and the standard NU25 MCT). This link is the NU25 MCT UL.

Fit and charging

Wear it low on the forehead and snug enough not to bounce. It charges over USB-C, and Nitecore includes a USB-C to USB-C cable. Pair it with reflective kit; the Highway Code points to reflective materials for being seen by drivers.

FAQ

Is it bright enough for trail running?

With a 400-lumen maximum and 132 m throw, it should light a path ahead at running pace; check the battery before a long dark run.

Does it have a red light?

Yes, an auxiliary red light with two brightness levels.
