Our verdict
The GD300 is the simple, socket-powered option. It is a lawn raker rather than a blade scarifier: it combs moss and loose thatch out of the lawn and collects it in the front box, which is the job the RHS describes doing with a spring-tine rake, only powered. BLACK+DECKER aims it at medium gardens and gives it a 30cm raking width and three raking heights, so you can start shallow and go deeper only if little is coming out.
Skip it if your nearest outdoor socket is a long way from the lawn, or if your thatch is a thick mat; a blade scarifier cuts into that more effectively. There is no battery to buy, but you do need a suitable outdoor extension lead and RCD protection.
Using it in autumn
Mow first, then rake in one direction and again across it, as the RHS suggests. Empty the box often; moss is bulky. Afterwards, aerate compacted areas, top-dress and re-seed bare patches.
FAQ
Is a lawn raker the same as a scarifier?
Not quite. A raker combs with tines; a scarifier cuts with blades. Both remove thatch and moss.
Does it collect what it rakes out?
Yes. The listing and maker page describe a large front-loading grass box.
