Our verdict
The CleanSlate XL makes sense when spot cleaning happens often and over larger areas. Its 96 fl oz tank holds about twice the Little Green 1400B's 48 oz, and the 7-inch WidePath tool covers a rug patch in fewer passes. Skip it if you mainly clean car seats or small cushions, where the smaller, lighter Bissell is easier to handle. The variant trap: Hoover also sells the CleanSlate and CleanSlate Plus, and Amazon lists XL bundles; check for FH15000V in the listing. Do not expect heat: Hoover's manual simply tells you to fill with warm water up to 140°F (60°C).
Using it well
Hoover's manual asks you to vacuum first, only clean upholstery coded "W" or "S/W", and test colorfastness on a hidden area with a damp white cloth, waiting ten minutes. Hold the tool about 5 inches above the stain to spray, scrub back and forth, then press down and pull toward you to extract. Empty the recovery tank when it reaches the MAX line or the motor sound changes. Afterwards, fill the tank with warm water and run it through the hose cleaning port for 10–15 seconds. A thermal protector stops the motor if it overheats; unplug it and let it cool for 30 minutes.
