Cordless or Stainless Steel? Choose a Cat Fountain by Power and Cleaning

Choose a cat fountain by power mode and washable parts. Compare Dockstream 2 Cordless and plug-in operation, then check filters, charging and care limits.

SellPix Editorial8 min readUpdated October 10, 2026

Quick answer: Choose the power mode that suits the drinking location, then check which parts you can wash. “Cordless” and “stainless steel” describe different features, so they are not opposing categories. A battery fountain can have a steel tray and still need careful hand washing elsewhere.

The PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 Smart Cordless Fountain is a useful example: its battery mode offers sensor-triggered flow, while continuous flow requires plugged-in power. Consider it when a location away from an outlet matters and you accept that flow behavior. For a drinking station beside an outlet, compare the plug-in version first. PETLIBRO model comparison.

At a glance

  • Decide whether the intended location needs battery power.
  • Decide whether you want sensor-triggered or continuous flow there.
  • Read the care instructions for every part, rather than relying on “steel.”
  • Check replacement filters and the charging routine before buying.
  • Treat tank capacity and drinking records as practical features, not unattended-care guarantees.

Compare the exact versions, not the family name

PETLIBRO identifies the Dockstream 2 Cordless as PLWF116 and the Dockstream 2 plug-in as PLWF106. Both have a listed 3 L tank and a stainless steel tray; the family name alone does not identify their power behavior. Manufacturer model table.

Buying question Dockstream 2 Cordless, PLWF116 Dockstream 2 plug-in, PLWF106
Can it run without a power cable? Yes, using its built-in battery No, adapter power is required
Flow options on battery Sensor-triggered only Not applicable
Flow options while plugged in Continuous or sensor-triggered Continuous or timed
Reason to shortlist Placement away from an outlet A fixed station beside an outlet

Power and flow entries come from PETLIBRO's version comparison. The shortlist reasons are our editorial interpretation.

First decide what “cordless” needs to accomplish

Picture the actual spot: can you see the water, lift the tank easily and reach it without moving furniture? If a suitable outlet is already there, the battery may add a routine without solving a placement problem. If the preferred location has no outlet, battery operation deserves consideration.

The crucial question is whether sensor-triggered flow suits that location. PETLIBRO's flow-mode explanation says battery operation does not offer continuous flow. Do not buy this model expecting an uninterrupted stream away from a socket. A different requirement needs a different shortlist.

Battery life is also a scenario, not a calendar appointment. PETLIBRO's battery FAQ attributes up to 30 days to its laboratory setup: one pet, 30 activations daily, each lasting 45 seconds. More activations can mean earlier charging. Its charging FAQ estimates 7–8 hours when not dispensing, or roughly 10 while operating. Our advice is to plan a charge location and keep another fresh-water option available; we have not measured those times.

A 3 L tank does not settle refill planning

The 3 L figure is listed tank capacity, not our measurement of water dispensed before the low-water cutoff. We did not find a separately specified usable capacity above that cutoff. Avoid converting the number into “days away”: different pets, settings and water conditions change the practical routine. Dockstream 2 specifications and low-water behavior.

For a buyer, the useful question is whether you can inspect and refill the station conveniently. Carrying a detachable tank to the sink is only convenient when the route, lifting height and available sink space work in your home.

Evaluate cleanable parts instead of material slogans

For PLWF116, PETLIBRO's dishwasher guidance gives a specific boundary:

Part or assembly Manufacturer care boundary
Integrated steel water tray and filter tray Dishwasher-safe below 194°F / 90°C, with a recommended maximum cleaning time of 1–2 hours
Filter cover Excluded from that dishwasher permission
Other washable parts Hand wash below 122°F / 50°C
Electrical base Do not rinse or submerge

The water tray and filter tray are integrated; do not pull them apart. These limits make “the whole fountain is dishwasher-safe” an inaccurate shortcut.

Before ordering any steel fountain, ask for a part diagram and care instructions. Identify the tank, tray, rotor or pump, filter housing and electrical base. Count the parts you must remove and where they will dry. This is a purchase-screening exercise, not a claim that we timed disassembly or found one design faster to clean.

Put filters into the ownership decision

PETLIBRO recommends replacing PLWF116 filters every two weeks for one pet, more often with several pets; its maintenance FAQ also describes routine interior cleaning. Filter changes do not replace washing.

Find a compatible refill before ordering the fountain. The current filter page names Dockstream 2, but check the selected pack against PLWF116 and the included parts. Compare the current refill cost and order frequency yourself. We do not preserve a changing price or assume that every similarly named filter fits.

A five-question buying worksheet

  1. Where will it stand? Name one accessible location and its power arrangement.
  2. Which flow do you need there? If continuous flow without a cable is essential, rule out PLWF116 for that use.
  3. Can you follow the care boundaries? Allow separate washing and drying space; keep the base dry.
  4. Can you maintain the complete setup? Confirm filters, charging access, included accessories and seller return terms.
  5. What will the records tell you? PLWF116 is intended to track one pet at a time, not identify individual drinkers at a shared fountain. Model FAQ.

Our purchase judgment: shortlist PLWF116 when location flexibility solves a real problem and sensor flow is acceptable. Compare PLWF106 when the station will stay beside an outlet. Pause either purchase if you cannot obtain clear care instructions or compatible consumables. For the linked variant's wider considerations, read our Dockstream 2 Cordless buying guide.

FAQ

Does a stainless steel tray remove the need for cleaning?

No. Material does not tell you which remaining parts can be washed or how to maintain the assembly. Use the exact model's instructions.

Can the Cordless model run continuously on battery?

No. PETLIBRO specifies sensor-triggered battery flow; continuous flow requires plugged-in power. The flow FAQ is the important checkout reference.

Can I compare only tank size and purchase price?

You would miss the flow mode, washable parts, consumables and charging arrangement. Compare the routine you are buying as well as the container.

Are the drinking records proof of a health benefit?

We do not make that claim. This guide compares household convenience and maintenance. An app record does not establish a diagnosis or promise a particular drinking response.
