Cat water fountain care: a 5-step weekly cleaning checklist
Slime builds up in every recirculating fountain. Here is a five-step weekly routine, the filter schedules the makers publish, and a six-slide carousel you can post.
Quick answer: Clean a cat water fountain at least once a week: unplug it, take it apart, wash the parts the maker says are washable, brush the pump, rinse (never soap) the filter and replace it on the maker's schedule. Houses with several cats may need to do it more often.

At a glance
- FRESHER WATER, LESS WORK – a short weekly routine beats a long monthly scrub, because slime is easier to remove while it is thin.
- STAINLESS HELPS – in one creator's test, stainless steel surfaces collected less slime than plastic ones.
- FOLLOW THE FILTER CLOCK – makers publish different schedules: one lists four weeks, another about two weeks for a single pet.
- KNOW WHAT IS DISHWASHER-SAFE – only the parts the maker lists; pumps, bases and control modules are not.
- POST-READY – the six-slide carousel below is sized for TikTok photo mode and Instagram.
Why a weekly clean?
Every recirculating fountain builds a film. In The Cat Butler's 2026 comparison the creator describes biofilm as a slimy layer of bacteria and other microorganisms that forms on wet surfaces, fed by saliva, hair and food particles each time a cat drinks, and reports slime appearing on plastic parts after about two weeks even with filtration. Veken's listing advises cleaning the fountain and pump weekly; a pet-product review site recommends every three to five days for multi-cat homes. Treat those as starting points, then watch the water and the tray.
The 5-step routine
- Unplug and empty. Switch off, unplug (or lift a cordless pump off its dock) and pour out the water.
- Take it apart. Separate the tray, tank, filter housing and pump. Keep small parts together.
- Wash the parts. Put only the parts the maker lists as dishwasher-safe on the top rack; wash the rest with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Do not use abrasive pads on stainless steel or scratch plastic, which gives slime a place to hide.
- Care for the pump and filter. Brush the pump and impeller; Catit's cleaning guide for its own fountains says to rinse filters under running water without soap and never to submerge the base or pump. Replace filters on the schedule your maker publishes.
- Refill and reset. Fresh water, a dry mat or tray underneath, and a note of the date.

Mistakes to avoid
- Using soap on the filter (Catit's guide says not to).
- Putting a pump, base or control module in the dishwasher unless the manual says so.
- Using a plastic bowl as a substitute: scratches give slime a place to grow.
FAQ
How often should I clean my cat's water fountain?
At least weekly. The Veken listing advises weekly cleaning of the fountain and pump; some review sites suggest every three to five days with several cats.
How often should I change the filter?
Follow the maker: Veken lists every four weeks and PETLIBRO about every two weeks for one pet.

In the reference creator's test, stainless steel stayed cleaner than plastic, and stainless is easier to scrub without scratching.

No. Only the parts the maker lists as dishwasher-safe. Pumps, bases and electronics should not be.
How we researched this
We did not buy or test these products. This guide is a research summary: product facts come from the Amazon listings and the makers' pages (read on 2026-10-09), and anything we call "tested" is credited to the person or publication that tested it. Prices, ratings and stock are not shown because they change daily; check the Amazon page. The biofilm description and the slime observations are one creator's account; the cleaning steps combine the makers' instructions.
