Our verdict
The SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap is the safe default when you are not sure about your cat's chip: Sure Petcare says it reads all common identification microchips and offers an online checker. It stores up to 32 pet IDs, so it suits busy multi-cat homes, and runs on 4 x AA batteries for up to 12 months according to the maker. What it lacks is a timer. You get a manual lock and an in-only mode, but no scheduled curfew.
The variant traps: the Microchip Pet Door is a larger model for big cats and small dogs, and the Microchip Cat Flap Connect adds app curfews but needs a separate Hub. This link is the standard cat flap.
Fitting
The door cut-out is 165 x 171 mm. For glass you need a round hole of 212 mm, or up to 260 mm with the separately sold mounting adaptor. For walls or thick doors, each tunnel extender adds 50 mm. The smallest entry opening is 142 x 120 mm, so check that your cat fits comfortably.
FAQ
Does it need a collar tag?
No, it reads the implanted microchip. A Sure Petcare RFID tag is an alternative for cats without a compatible chip.
Can it lock at night automatically?
Not this version. It has manual locking; timed curfews need the Connect model with Hub.
