Our verdict

The Flashline Underseat is a neat answer to the wheels problem. With its castors on, the listing gives 45 x 30 x 20 cm, which sits inside easyJet's 45 x 36 x 20 cm limit, and easyJet counts wheels and handles. Take the one-click wheels off and it measures 40 x 30 x 20 cm, the Ryanair free size, with a bag to keep the wheels in. You get a hard shell, a TSA combination lock and interior straps, at 20 litres and 2 kg.

The catch for Ryanair is practical: you need to remove the wheels before the bag is checked against the sizer, and then carry the wheels as well. A hard shell cannot squeeze, so there is no give if it is borderline. The variant trap: American Tourister sells other Flashline sizes, including 55 cm cabin spinners; this link is the 45 cm underseat model.

Using it on each airline

On easyJet, keep the wheels on. On Ryanair or Wizz Air, take them off before you reach the gate and stow them in their bag inside the case if they fit, or you risk the case being measured at 45 cm.

How we researched this
